Get ready to celebrate some of the area’s most talented artists and authors as they gather in the Village Square Park to display, discuss and sell their creative works. May 26, noon until 5 pm. Activities for adults and children, including a visit from Mayor Jim Watson, author readings, story time with the Ottawa Public Library, and children’s crafts directed by Tracy Lewis of Tracy’s Art Studio. Break and Enter Concerns:

Issue: Recently, various door to door salespeople have been reported in the Stittsville/Kanata area. There have been complaints of aggressive sales techniques and questionable tactics (including false claims or data) to encourage residents to purchase. As with any purchase, do your own research to determine if this product is suitable and beneficial for you and your home. Ask the salesperson to leave pamphlets or advertising material and you can get back to them at your convenience.

Do not feel pressured to answer questions or to allow a stranger into your residence and feel free to terminate the conversation when you no longer wish to engage with them. If you ask them to leave your property and they do not, please call Police at 613-230-6211.

What you can do – General Safety Tips:

- Lock doors, use door viewers when possible.
- Avoid leaving items of value (purses, laptops etc.) in plain view of doors and windows. Shut blinds and curtains.
- Report suspicious activity
- Trim trees and shrubs that could easily hide intruders
- Have adequate exterior lighting
- Improve home security with deadbolts etc.

Meeting Regarding the New Landfill Proposal

The SVA Executive Committee will be holding a special executive meeting on Thursday, March 21^st at 7:00 pm at the Johnny Leroux Community Centre. The SVA needs to assess its position and provide comments in light of the Ministry Of Environment Review of the Environmental Assessment for a New Landfill Footprint at the West Carleton Environmental Centre (Carp Road Dump). All SVA Executive Committee Meetings are open to the public.

Rain Barrel Sale

Thank you to everyone who ordered a rain barrel through this year’s SVA fundraiser in partnership with rainbarrel.ca. Pre-orders are now closed, but thanks to the gracious support of Stittsville Sobeys, we have been able to order several dozen extra barrels that will be sold in the store. Barrels are $55, with $10 from each sale going to support the SVA’s work in the community, and toward SVA sponsored events such as Artists & Authors in the Park, Canada Day, Villagefest and Parade of Lights.

Rain Barrels are available in grey, white & black for $55 each. Filter basket, spigot, nipple, overflow adaptor & 4 ft of overflow hose included in this 220 litre/55 US gallon barrel. Made of recycled material when possible. Ideal for gardens & lawns.

SVA Meetings

The Stittsville Village Association will usually meet every second Thursday of every month at 7pm. Meetings will be held at the Community Room at Sobeys in Stittsville. Everyone is welcome. Next meeting is on April 11, 2013.

Petition for a Public High School

Parade of Lights Nov. 24 Stittsville Main Street

Mark your calendar! The Parade of Lights takes place November 24th, 6:30 pm. Contact Marilyn Jenkins for information about registering a float.

The SVA’s annual Parade of Lights is a community favourite, drawing thousands of spectators along the parade route. Each year, dozens of beautifully decorated community floats set the tone for Santa’s much anticipated arrival at the end of the parade. Before the parade begins, residents are invited to purchase ‘Reindeer Insurance’ as both protection from any damage that might be inflicted by Santa’s four-legged companions, and as a way of supporting future SVA social events. The parade is followed by a park lighting ceremony and hot chocolate.

The parade runs along Stittsville Main from Carp Rd. to Carleton Cathcart.

Annual General Meeting Nov. 22nd.

The SVA will hold its Annual General Meeting November 22nd at 7:30 pm in the former council chamber at Goulbourn Town Hall, 2135 Huntley Road. The agenda will include election of officers for 2012/2013, voting on proposed changes to the SVA Constitution (details below), issues raised by those in attendance, and the presentation of reports on issues addressed by the SVA in 2011/2012 (growth and development, transportation concerns, environmental issues, and community social events). Light refreshments available. Everyone welcome!

Councillor Shad Qadri will also address the meeting.

This is your association. As residents and business owners in Stittsville, this is your opportunity to see how the SVA works to shape the character of your community.

Notice:Proposed changes to the SVA Constitution:

AMENDMENT: 7(1) amended to read “…with paragraph 9(5) or as determined at an Annual General Meeting.”

NEW: 7(4) “The immediate Past President shall be an ex officio non-voting member of the Executive Committee.”

Villagefest Silly Dogs & Kids Contest

Villagefest is coming soon (Sept. 29th)! One of the fun activities planned for this year’s celebration is a SILLY DOGS & KIDS contest. Categories are: Biggest Paws, Fluffiest Ears, Longest Tail, Best Dressed, & Best Dog/Owner Look Alikes.

There will be prizes for both owner and dog in each category. Showing and judging will occur between 12:00 and 12:30 pm. Prizes to be awarded between 12:30 & 12:45 pm. Winners must be there (at Village Square Park) to receive a prize.
